Junk Culture
Summer Friends
Oxford, MS

“Wait for the summer”

Deepak Mantena picked the name of his sample heavy, pop/jungle project honestly: Junk Culture combines a strange mixture of beats and synthetic sounds to create something rather accessible and catchy. Mantena managed to create Summer Friends without losing a little weirdness to keep out of the mainstream, just like any junk culture enthusiast should.

Mantena continues to work with dance-inducing beats. He varnishes these head bopping loops with vocal clips repeating equally as hooking words. It might not make much sense now, but don’t be surprised to hear a never ending spiral of “Honeysuckle dripping on my tongue all evening” after listening to “Honeysuckle.”

Mantena has created an entertaining and jammable mix with Summer Friends. It might not make the best ignorable beat-heavy background music, but it sure will sound good at the first barbecue of the season, far away though it may seem. (Illegal Art)
