Live Review: Barika at Manifestivus 2011

by | Jul 24, 2011 | Concerts & Festivals, Reviews

Barika creates a soundscape of funk soaked in psychedelic, West African resonance. The outfit stands out because they are multidimensional – laying down n’goni, percussion, bass and keys (and this time they came with a horn section in tow!). Like Toubab Krewe, Barika is an intriguing take on West African influences and contemporary American funk music. Led by their grooves, Barika is wholly rhythmic, captivating audiences with the beautiful, hypnotic way in which they interweave melody and groove to create something that is not only danceable, but incredibly interesting to listen to. These guys are definitely worth checking out.
