The opening chords of “Out of the Blue” are as gritty as a mouthful of sand, forecasting much of Alien Ocean‘s balance between beach-pop and gloomy blues.
The new Crushed Out record dotes along with beach bingo giddiness and snorkel dance move-inspiring tracks that cover an array of naughty nautical exploits, including “Ride the Tide,” “Tsunami” and “Skinny Dippin’.”
▼ Article continues below ▼With washed-out cymbals, thick guitars and layered vocals, the production of the record creates a mammoth wall of sound, particularly on “Cool Clear Water” and the innuendo-driven “Big Woolly.”

It’s been a good long while since minimalist rock has managed to be as genuinely frenetic, endearing and unabashedly sassy as it does on this truly charming LP.
