To celebrate, we asked the band to pick their top 5 favorite tracks recorded at the legendary studio to share with you. Enjoy (and be sure to scroll down to hear some new Nightowls songs).
“Are You Lonely for Me, Baby”- Al Green
▼ Article continues below ▼The first song comes from one of our heroes and Royal Studios legends, the Reverend Al Green. We love this song because of the crunchy horns, the classic Al Green drum beat, and soaring female vocals. Al Green at his best.
“A Touch of the Blues”- Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland
Bobby Blue Bland isn’t afraid to sing the blues. From his sweet tenor to his gnarl of a scream, you can’t listen to this song and not feel your heart getting yanked out of your chest.
“I Can’t Stand the Rain”- Ann Peebles
Another staple in the Royal studios catalogue, Ann Peebles’ song “I Can’t Stand the Rain” has been covered and sampled hundreds of times due to her iconic delivery of her line “I can’t stand the rain” paired with producer Willie Mitchell’s choice to feature the electric timbale in the song’s intro.
“I’m Gonna Find Another You”- John Mayer
We’re huge fans of John Mayer’s 2006 album, Continuum, especially the final track “I’m Gonna Find Another You.” It’s a simple love song that mainly features Mayer’s guitar and voice but also weaves a beautiful horn arrangement written by studio owners and father-son duo, Willie and Boo Mitchell.
“UpTown Funk”- Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars
This Grammy-winning juggernaut deserves its place in Royal Studios history due to its weaving of classic soul, Minneapolis funk and modern pop sounds with Mars’ sweet vocal abilities. It’s a fun way to dance the night away.
