Superhuman Happiness’s second full-length release, Escape Velocity, is an airy study in art rock, new wave and relaxed post-disco rhythms, along with added elements of shoegaze pop. The effort is something like Yo La Tengo’s I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One mingled with the likes of ’80s-era David Bowie and TV on the Radio.
With just seven tracks, the 36-minute LP breezily bounces between ecstatic and dancey choruses and introspective and exploratory dream pop. Escape Velocity is intended to be a “cinematic exploration” of the human relationship with technology, and indeed provides a sweeping and filmic backdrop for the group’s postmodern ruminations.
