Live Review: Movement of the People at Manifestivus 2011

Local Vermont band Movement of the People summons its existence from the great Fela Kuti, performing the Nigerian afrobeat pioneer’s music. Movement of the People is a vibrant bunch of characters that don’t quite make sense, visually, when put together. That’s the point though, right? – because they channel Fela with an impressionable amount of energy, each unique but powerful within their unity. They truly represent “the people”, though at times rub off a bit odd. Movement of the People is a hilarious, fun band to watch in action, and they’re grasp on Kuti’s sound is admirable. Tight, loud, down-low afrobeat –  now that’s the stuff. Check out a clip of them performing at Manifestivus:
