Gear Review: Planet Waves Guitar Rest

Pros: Simple, inexpensive, does the job.
Cons: None to speak of.
Price: $12.99

So many times a player rests an instrument on the edge of a countertop or table. As soon as the hand leaves the instrument, nine times out of ten, it slides its way off of the edge and slams onto the floor. Planet Wave’s Guitar Rest is a new, inexpensive way to solve an old, potentially expensive problem – namely damaging your prized gear through carelessness. Quite simply, the Guitar Rest turns any flat surface into a slip-free guitar stand.

It’s made out of a black rubber material that grips any tabletop surface very well, and doesn’t leave any marks behind. At the same time, it can be easily moved around. The circle indentation on the top of the unit is a good spot to keep picks, slides and capos from wandering off, as well. The material also doesn’t seem to leave any marks on the neck, unlike the cheap padding on some other guitar stands. It definitely falls into that “why didn’t someone think of this sooner?” category.

In a cramped studio or recording space, it’s a cheap and easy way to securely place your instrument, without fumbling with a typical guitar stand. It’s also small enough to throw in a gig bag or case. It retails for about $12.99, and is far cheaper than a full-size guitar stand, and/or a trip to the repair shop to get that broken headstock fixed.
