We’re cooking up some magic in the studio and shooting out three new tube mics from the Alchemy range by Telefunken, all with the help of our good friend Jesus Martinez at Decibel Studios in LA. Martinez recently conducted a session with his group Boleros with Attitude, pitting the mics against each other to determine the best application for each in a recording scenario.
Watch Episode 1 below as he sets the scene for the shootout, and gives his initial impressions why he choose each mic for its particular application during the recording process.
Once mic placement and positioning was determined, he set things up with the band and recorded a full song using just a three-mic setup: TF39 TF47 and the TF51. Listen to Martinez’s thoughts from the studio on the setup process, how the mics fit each of the instruments in the group, including guitar, vocals and requinto, and the special qualities tube mics offer to enrich your own recordings.
Below in Part II we get to hear the entire setup in the context of a fully-produced mix live, and also hear each mic solo’d to listen to the nuances they afford to each musician.
