RECORD REVIEW: Huak
55
Secret Trees
Portland, ME
Engineered & mastered by Ron Harrity at New Systems Laundry
By: Billy Seidel
March 2010

Huak's second release, the EP Secret Trees. brings forth a heavy hit of melodic punk mixed well with mathy, toe-tapping grooves. Each one of the five songs on the record offers different musical sections and styles that bend your attention with intelligent and artful tastes. The four members of the band play well with each other as they switch tempos, building up to powerful and ear-catching transitions and exploring different time signatures and deep rhythms.

Huak's use of lead and supporting vocals play off each other and include borderline manic blares of emotional expression and subtle lyrical cleverness. As the locomotive drums pound away with sporadic force, the bass plucks feverishly and skillfully grips everything else happening. Most of the tracks have two guitar lines that sync and compliment each other as in a game of musical cat-and-mouse.

The track "Sleep Dept" pulls you in when you first hear it. It starts with a powerful guitar twanging in 7/4 and adds an energetic drum line and full-force bass groove. Back-and-forth frantic shouts come in as the song starts to build, thoughtfully entering a slow-rising section of embracing, hypnotic rock. Huak adds a raw tone to proggy punk style, a sound they have endeared to make their own. The energy and overall feel to this splendid EP will captivate anyone who has a fondness of proficient rock well-thought-out rhythms. (Peapod Records)
