RECORD REVIEW: Bomb the Bass
Back to Light
"Chilled, spaced and tranced-out"
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Produced by Gui Boratto

By: Tara Lacey
February 2010

Nederlanden's dance-trance export Bomb the Bass, aka Tim Simenon, proves he can keep those feet grooving all night with the new album Back To Light. The dance rhythms are nothing short of electric and the experimental, spacey sounds drive this chilled-out, delightfully downtempo release. And the album gains momentum, ending stronger than it begins.

The record starts with relaxed, sliding keys that progress into chillingly spaced-out vocals curiously juxtaposed with poppy synth. It's laced with fun robotic effects that accentuate the album throughout. "The Infinites," is a catchy keys-driven tune riddled with trippy, electronic effects kicking the trance vocal into high gear. A favorite is "Price on Your Head," lyrically linked to the throbbing synthed-out sounds that probe the listener to not only keep moving to BTB's techno groove, but also uniquely marries musical phraseology to lyric verbiage - it's downtempo dance done nice.

Bomb the Bass picks up the tempo with "Blindspot," featuring light, synthetic cymbals and true to their name, a much more bass-heavy and pulsating vibe. "Burn Less Brighter" offers experimental and repetitive funky effects lending strength to the end of the record. "The Mountain" finishes off the album with Crystal Castles-like left-to-right speaker effects and intense female vocals, albeit much sweeter than those of CC's Alice Glass. (!K7)
