Big Sound Productions and Studio
Combining Vintage and Modern Sounds

Located in Westbrook, Big Sound Productions and Studios offers a number of services including recording, mixing, mastering, live recording and replication. They have two in-house keyboards – a Hammond Porta-B and a Leslie 122 – along with a 1960s Orange OR-120 amp. Big Sound also has about a dozen different high-quality microphones, analog and digital recording capabilities (Pro Tools HD3) and an excellent selection of monitors. They also work with the legendary Trident Series 80 console. Big Sound’s live rooms, designed by renowned acoustician Michael Blackmer, feature a modern-looking and sonically perfected design of high ceilings and non-parallel surfaces that add to the natural wood ambiance. The control room, also designed by Blackmer, is spacious enough to accommodate playback for larger groups, while rose-colored walls and soft lighting maintain the intimate atmosphere.

About ten years ago, Big Sound built an additional studio room to house a new mixing and mastering suite designed by New York acoustician Matthew Todd Bagarozzo. Studio B features automated mixing as well as a Sonic Solutions mastering system. The monitors are Mackie HR-824 and ATC SCM-100A.

Big Sound has a list of just under 100 clients (mostly from the area) but the generous studio will accommodate your band overnight with no extra charge.

Their “virtual tour” reveals that the studio has four separate bedrooms, a lounge with cable TV, bathroom and shower. Not too shabby.
