A little history: Josh Clark built Studio B and opened in October 2003. Charles Burst met Clark a few years earlier while playing drums in The Occasion with Clark’s longtime friend Brent Cordero, who had a recording and rehearsal space shared with Mitch on Henry St. in a section of Chinatown. Those two ruled the Otari MX5050 8 track and Burst recorded Clark’s first NY band, Castle, in early ‘03.
As of winter in 2004, Burst joined forces with Clark to build Studio A, which took six months to complete. Studio A opened in August ‘04 and has been host to some excellent recordings. Rackin held onto his space in Chinatown and opened Tonefloat Recording with an Otari MTR 90 2” 24 track along with some outboard and mics. As Seaside’s business grew, they realized they needed some help and extra gear, so they partnered up with Rackin, who came on board during the Winter of ‘07. They couldn’t think of a better engineer to compliment their vision of recording.
During all this McCarthy was their first intern who started during the summer of 2005. He already had a fairly thorough knowledge of recording, which they augmented with their vast knowledge and Google searches. He has since become a great engineer. All have become good friends and really love what they do. You can’t spend ten hours soldering audio cables with just anyone.
Trivia/Interesting Facts
They own Eddie Van Halen’s former tape machine (3m m56), which also was used to record at least the first three Van Halen records.
Recording tip from the Engineer
Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. One of the most useful skills you can have as an engineer is tuning drums. The drums HAVE to sound good before there’s ever a mic put up. You can’t fix it in the mix.
