Fugazi Frontman Ian McKaye plays an acoustic set at The Space

Once upon a time, a band member of Mighty Purple named Steve Rodgers opened up his practice space for open mic and music collaboration, and after much evolution, the result was The Space.

Nestled in a suburb of New Haven, the appropriately-named The Space provides a cozy music venue accessible to fans of all ages. Evolving out of a local underground open mic scene, The Space is small in size but large in ambition. They feature local and out-of-state bands regularly almost every night of the week. Though they do not serve alcohol, they do have tea, coffee, wraps, sandwiches and a hummus platter, placing them somewhere between a homey basement and a neighborhood cafe.

With a $10 cover charge, fans can catch music from many genres including indie rock, pop, punk, reggae and country.

BOOKING INFO

Their website provides detailed instructions for bands interested in booking a show. Shows are booked six-to-eight weeks in advance. Tuesdays are still set aside for open mic, maintaining the roots of The Space.
