The Iguana Music Fund
Helping Musicians Finish Projects

The Passim Folk Music and Cultural Center launches The Iguana Music Fund to financially support musicians in need with grants from $500-$2,000

A generous anonymous donor who understands the financial struggles many independent artists are facing nowadays has donated funds for beginning or established musicians with a connection to New England. The fund will help facilitate the professional and artistic development of their music endeavors. It will be facilitated through Passim Folk Music & Cultural Center, where applications are now being accepted.

The Iguana Music Fund grants are made to individual artists for specific career building projects. Areas of support may include, but are not limited to recording or manufacturing assistance, publicity or marketing support, additional equipment or instruments, instrument repair or replacement, special projects and other specific activities promoting artistic and professional growth.

This fund is open to all professional musicians with ties to the New England area, either by residence or through regular touring activities.

Applications will be accepted from September 1, 2008 through November 15, 2008. Awards will be made by December 31, 2008.

The application can be found online at the Passim Folk Music and Cultural Center’s website, www.passimcenter.org.

Q Division Studio’s In-House Music Service
Songwriting Fit for TV

Some of the strongest and catchiest melodies ever written have been scored for commercial purposes. Not to say releasing CDs isn’t “commercial,” but literally, for TV commercials.

Esteemed Somerville studio, Q Division, has appointed Boston-based songwriter Frank Ciampi as their Director of Music Services and head composer.

Ciampi, a Berklee graduate who majored in jazz bass performance, has been in the process of scoring demos for commercials in collaboration with music licensing company Vapor Music for MasterCard, Spin Master/Air Hogs Toys, Coca-Cola, Canadian Tire and more.
Also in progress is Ciampi’s score for Fathers and Son, a new animated series by Fox.

Ciampi’s day-to-day operations include creating a music library for Q Division Music consisting of original compositions and cues ranging from 15 seconds to one minute. Ciampi adds, “Q Division Music’s philosophy, musically speaking, has been to keep all avenues open and available to our clients. We never force any certain style or musical genre to picture. Some of our best work has been produced by taking a less traditional route when scoring.”

Unlike other studios relying on samples and outside musicians for commercial projects, Q Division Music keeps the budget down in costs by having everything under one roof. Ciampi adds, “Within Q, there are two huge live rooms that are well suited for an orchestra, a baby grand piano, any keyboard you could ask for, vintage gear, great engineers on call, as well as two kitchens, lounge areas, foosball table and beer. Those are all things that we are proud to offer to our clients.”

Venue Profile

Great Scott
Local and National Bands Co-exist in Harmony

Great Scott has grown to be one of the main venues in Boston’s live indie underground music scene. The club, which has served as a venue for live music for six years but has been in existence for 18, prides itself on the variety of musicians they host and the welcoming atmosphere the venue promotes. Great Scott’s deep-set stage allows for visitors to both enjoy the music up close and also come up for air to drink and chat with the Allston community that frequents there. The club has also become a favorite space for local bands such as The Bon Savants, Clickers and Night Rally. The venue has hosted national acts such as Hot Chip, Of Montreal and Wolfmother. Great Scott also recognizes the importance of community service; every Thanksgiving, they host a dinner for anyone who needs a place to have a Thanksgiving meal and feel at home. So, for a plethora of local or national indie bands in an eclectic, welcoming environment, Great Scott is the place to be.
