On Monday, March 11, Performer will present a killer bill at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, featuring Nightlands & Efterklang. We recently caught up with Philly’s Nightlands (aka Dave Hartley) to chat about his music.
“I used to be in a lot more bands – so I don’t think it’s necessarily always a good thing to be in so many. You can spread yourself too thin. Sometimes I kick myself for saying yes all the time, but it’s really hard to say no – especially when they’re my friends.” And Hartley has plenty of those who are willing to aid in his unconventional recording process.
“When it comes to recording, I tend to isolate myself and work really long hours. But I get cabin fever so friends come over and play and I get to see how they react. But it’s not too collaborative – it is definitely my vision.”
And even if Hartley continues to make music that can be considered weird, he does so with only one goal in mind. “Even though my process is complex, I just want to make songs that sound really beautiful. I don’t know if others will think that, but that’s what I aim for.”
See Nightlands and Efterklang in concert! Comment below for your chance to win a pair of tix. One winner will be selected no later than March 11 at noon Eastern. Good luck!
