In 2008, Screw Pop Culture began as a bi-weekly music podcast with the intention of spotlighting local independent artists, while not so subtly giving the middle finger to the platinum culture of the music industry. The show has grown to promote a vast selection of genres and locations and in 2011 expanded into a 24-hour streaming format on Radio KSCR.
This September, in celebration of its fourth anniversary, SPC will be hosting its first awards show. However, instead of buying into the “popularity contests” that they believe other award shows have become, SPC aims to award artists purely for their talent. Musicians and fans have the opportunity to nominate themselves or their favorite independent and unsigned artists for various awards on the SPC website until July 31st.
Some of the award categories include Singer of the Year, Best Live Performance, Hottest Bass Player “(because real fans know who the bassist is),” and Best Lyrical Content among many others. Winners chosen by a panel of music professionals, enthusiasts, and academics, along with a couple category winners dictated by fan votes, will be announced at the official awards ceremony at Sandbox Studios in L.A. on September 15, 2012.
