ATHFEST 2011 will be held in downtown Athens, GA, June 22nd through June 26th, 2011. ATHFEST is the annual music and arts festival which benefits AthFest, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to music and arts education. For the past 14 years, ATHFEST has showcased the best in local, regional, and nationally recognized Athens-based talent. The festival includes KIDSFest, a juried artisan market, film events and more! From 2005-2010, ATHFEST has been included in the “TOP 20 Events for June” by the Southeast Tourism Society.
This year approximately 150 bands and artists will perform on the 3 outdoor stages and in a dozen venues. This year’s headlining artists on the outdoor stages include: FUTUREBIRDS, CENTRO-MATIC, GUADALCANAL DIARY, CHICKASAW MUDD PUPPIES, and JASON ISBELL & THE 400 UNIT. All performances on the outdoor stages are open to all ages and are free of charge to the public.
The evening’s “club crawl” takes place on the Friday and Saturday nights of the festival. Wristbands may be purchased for $15.00 in advance or for $20.00 at the festival. Venue age restrictions will apply.
ATHFEST is still accepting submissions from artists/bands interested in performing at the festival. The deadline is April 15, 2011. ATHFEST is also seeking volunteers and artists for the juried artisan market. Information may be found on the website www.athfest.com.
Each year, Ghostmeat Records releases a compilation of local music to benefit AthFest, Inc. This year’s CD features 13 tracks, most previously unreleased, representing a fine cross-section of the Athens music scene including: The Knockouts, BombsBombsBombs, Vestbules, The Spinoffs, Spirit Hair, Adam Klein, The Romper Stompers, power kompany, The Welfare Liners, Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band, Monahan, Free Mountain and The Burning Angels. The CD sponsors include Flagpole, Chase Park Transduction, Oasis Disc Manufacturing, and Magic 102.1 FM.
The free CD release show, presented by AthFest and The Athens Folk Music Dance Society, will be held at The Melting Point on Monday, June 6th from 8:00-10:00 P.M. Performers will be announced.
All the net proceeds from the annual festival, the annual Athens, GA Half Marathon, and the sale of the CD support AthFest, Inc.’s year-round efforts in music and arts education in the local schools.
