The Casbah has been a beloved music establishment since its opening in 1989. Their original location had a meager capacity of 75, but hosted many alternative rock icons, such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana and The Lemonheads.
Their new corner spot at 2501 Kettner Blvd has a unique setting a capacity of 200 plus. It comes fully equipped with pool tables, two full bars, a pinball machine and Galaga, the classic video game. They also have a superb state-of-the-art sound system that emits crystal clear audio in the live music room. Another highlight of the current location (1994-present) is the secluded outdoor smoking area decorated in band stickers and a crimson crescent moon adorning the doorway.
Previous performers on the current Casbah stage include Basement Jaxx, T.S.O.L., Ben Harper, Liz Phair, MGMT, TV on the Radio, DeVotchKa, Franz Ferdinand, Vampire Weekend, The Arcade Fire, The Shins, Gogol Bordello, Cold War Kids, Weezer, Silversun Pickups, The White Stripes, Death Cab for Cutie, Flogging Molly and Pinback. The ambiance of the Casbah can suit many genres.
The Casbah features tons of local musicians and has live music six nights a week. Their hours are 8:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. with a 21+ age requirement. They book bands up to three months in advance and can be reached at bookcasbah@gmail.com. The Casbah’s sound specs and stage stats can be found at casbahmusic.com.
