Swayze’s in Marietta sits snugly in a shopping center close enough to Kennesaw State University for college-aged fans, but targets an audience of teens and new bands that can use the stage experience. The owner, Lee Satterfield, started Swayze’s nearly ten years ago and moved to the current location due to almost overwhelming popularity. Says Satterfield, “Back when I was in a band, Tree Fort, I would get so annoyed at supply and demand issues for places to gig in the suburbs. I started a venue not because I was good at it, but because of the need in the community for a place like Swayze’s. I just did it and it’s been almost ten years. We even had to move after the first six months to a bigger place. I love this.” Bands enjoy house amenities including a PA system, mics, cables and stands.
“Bands just know about us from our reputation and word of mouth. I book anyone who works well and accepts the responsibility to promote their show,” Lee Satterfield said about bands that get booked.
In addition to allowing most local bands to play regardless of how many tickets they can pre-sell, Swayze’s helps artists promote and market themselves by accepting CDs from acts to play between live sets. One of the best aspects of Swayze’s is the fact that the people who frequent the club genuinely want to hear music. Some might expect a so-called “teen club” to have kids hanging out in the parking lot drinking underage, but that’s not the case. The atmosphere caters well to those who wish to listen to music and be with friends. No alcohol is sold on site and only a few snacks are available. Swayze’s is a great place for upcoming bands to play and fans to discover new local talent.
